Backpackers Guide to Koh Rong Cambodia 2024 Edition:
Discover the laid-back charm of Kaoh Touch Village on Koh Rong, a backpacker’s paradise offering pristine beaches, vibrant dining options, and affordable accommodation.
Journey to Kaoh Touch Village: How to get to Koh Rong?
There is no airport on this tiny island, so it is quite the journey to get to this slice of paradise. You will want to first reach Phnom Penh, most backpackers arrive here via bus from Siem Reap. If you were not exploring the beautiful Angkor Wat in the northern part of the country already, you can always fly into Phnom Penh directly. Once in Phnom Penh you will want to arrange a bus ticket to Sihanoukville Cambodia, a seaside town in Southern Cambodia. It will be a 3-6 hour bus ride from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
Once you arrive in Sihanoukville you will want to go to the port., all Tuk Tuk drives will understand where you want to go. Once you arrive at the port you will need to buy a speedboat ticket to Koh Rong, the port is lined with offices selling tickets. Your Tuk Tuk driver will likely go into his preferred shop with you, as all the Tuk Tuks in this area get commission for bringing passengers to a sales office. Fortunately all the ticket offices charge the same price ($25 round trip), so just go with the flow and let your Tuk Tuk driver get the commission. It does not matter which company you use as they all depart around the same time.
Where to Stay in Koh Rong for All The Action?
You will want to stay in the ultra backpacker friendly Kaoh Touch Village (Koh Touch). The beach is lined with guesthouses, hostels, and restaurants catering to backpackers. This may be one of the only places left in the world that has not been overrun with “mass tourism”, likely due to the fact of how hard it is to reach. This tiny village is the hub of Koh Rong.
What to do in Koh Rong? Hint: Nothing!
This is the type of place where you really won’t need to, or want to do anything. Spend your day on the beach tanning, swimming, and drinking mass amounts of smoothies. Enjoy some great Cambodian food with an island twist, and enjoy one of the last untouched pieces of paradise in the world. You will not see an obnoxious Karen, entitled Ken, or Ultra Elite Diamond Member Yacht Club person in site.
